Establish Federal Laws to Strengthen Penalties for Animal Abuse

Establish Federal Laws to Strengthen Penalties for Animal Abuse
The Issue
As someone who views their dogs as precious family members, it dismays me to see innocent, defenseless animals subjected to horrifying abuse. It is deeply troubling to see pets treated with unimaginable cruelty, and the current state laws aiming to prevent such actions simply do not go far enough.
As a nation, we must rise against animal cruelty and leverage our federal legislation system to uphold our responsibility towards these harmless creatures that bring us immeasurable joy. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) reports that there are about 5,000 community animal shelters nationwide that are independent; there is no national law overseeing their actions.
Therefore, I urge lawmakers to establish a federal law superseding state laws on animal abuse, introducing stricter guidelines for the punishment of animal cruelty. This law would prohibit convicted abusers from owning pets, mandating prison time as a necessary part of the sentencing process.
Incredibly, according to the Animal Legal Defense Fund, animal abuse goes unchecked as serious crime due to lack of adequate provisions in the legal framework. To ensure our pets' safety and wellbeing, our legal system must recognize animals as more than property and put in place robust protections and strict penalties for their abusers.
