Establish Ecocide Law in Bangladesh to Safeguard Our Environment
The Issue
I am an environmental activist, deeply rooted in the love for my country, Bangladesh. I have witnessed the transformation of our once green and flourishing nation into a landscape marred by pollution and ecological degradation. Illegal occupation of rivers and forests has led to severe consequences - air pollution, soaring temperatures, scarcity of clean water, flash floods, increasing deforestation and a devastating loss of biodiversity.
Bangladesh is the seventh most climate change vulnerable country, according to the Global Climate Risk Index (CRI) 2021 (Germanwatch). Our rivers are dying due to illegal encroachment; over 190 rivers are under threat as per a report from National River Conservation Commission (NRCC).
According to Global Forest Watch, from 2002 to 2022, Bangladesh lost 7.64 kha of humid primary forest, making up 3.4% of its total tree cover loss in the same time period. Total area of humid primary forest in Bangladesh decreased by 8.0% in this time period.
We cannot stand idle while our environment suffers. We need urgent action - we need an ecocide law in Bangladesh that criminalizes extensive damage or destruction of ecosystems. Such laws will hold individuals or corporations accountable for their actions against nature.
This is not just about preserving our environment but also about safeguarding the future generations who deserve clean air, pure water and thriving biodiversity just as we did once upon a time.
It's time we rise up for our land before it's too late. Sign this petition today urging lawmakers in Bangladesh to establish an ecocide law protecting our precious environment from further harm.
