Establish Attacks on Nurses as Federal Offenses

Title: Protect Our Nurses: End Violence Against Healthcare Workers 🚨

Petition Message:
Nurses are the backbone of our healthcare system, but they continue to face unacceptable levels of violence on the job. Leelamma Lal, a 67-year-old nurse at HCA Florida Palms West Hospital, was brutally attacked by a patient — suffering severe injuries while simply doing her job. This is not an isolated incident; it’s a dangerous pattern that needs to stop. Nurses put their lives on the line to care for us — it's time we protect them.

I am a nurse. In recent times, we healthcare heroes have seen a significant rise in crimes against us, some of them fatal. As fundamental parts of the healthcare system, we frequently risk our lives for the wellbeing of others. These crimes are not only inhumane but are leading to a severe problem - a looming shortage of nurses. This is a crisis we cannot afford. The urgency for protection is similar to the standard set for postal workers under U.S. Code Title 18, Section 1114, and we believe the same protection should be extended to nurses. According to the American Nurses Association, nearly one in four nurses has been assaulted at work. Despite such alarming statistics, many of these incidents go underreported and unpunished. The existing regulations not only fail to address these grievances but also fail to deter potential offenders. To address this issue, we demand the legislation to make attacks on nurses a federal offense. Allowing this to continue will cause irreparable damage to our healthcare system. Nurses are a lifeline we can't afford to lose. We need your support. Please, sign this petition to make the protection of Nurses a national priority.
