The Issue

To:

Honourable Lucy Kuptana, Minister Responsible for Housing NWT

Jane Weyallon Armstrong, Member of the Legislative Assembly for Monfwi

We, the undersigned, are residents and supporters of Behchoko, Northwest Territories, and we are calling for urgent action.

Behchoko is currently facing a serious housing crisis. There is no emergency housing available in our community, and many people — including children, Elders, single parents, and those with medical needs — are experiencing homelessness or living in unsafe, overcrowded conditions.

The lack of emergency shelter is forcing individuals to sleep on couches, or rely on relatives who are already struggling to make ends meet. This is especially dangerous during the cold northern winters and creates long-term stress, instability, and trauma.

We are calling on the Government of the Northwest Territories to:

Create a local emergency housing program in Behchoko
Ensure that it is culturally appropriate, family-friendly, and safe
Provide support services alongside housing (mental health, addiction support, etc.)

Everyone deserves access to safe and secure shelter — no one in Behchoko should be left without a place to call home.

We urge our elected officials to act now.

Jackson Lafferty
