Establish an animal control officer for Steuben County

Establish an animal control officer for Steuben County
The Issue
In Steuben County, IN, the safety and well-being of both our cherished pets and community members have reached a serious level that is often not talked about or addressed by law enforcement when notified of animal cruelty and neglect situations, highlighting the urgent need for dedicated animal control services. Currently, without a specialized Animal Control Officer, numerous incidents involving stray, injured, abused, or neglected animals remain unaddressed, posing safety risks and also reflecting poorly on our community’s humanitarian commitments.
The creation of an Animal Control Officer position is long overdue. This officer will not only be responsible for addressing complaints about nuisance animals but will also investigate cases of animal cruelty, neglect, and abandonment with the backing of legal authority, assisting in ensuring that offenders are held accountable. By working in partnership with the Community Humane Shelter of Steuben County, this officer can coordinate rescue operations more effectively, ensuring that animals in distress receive the immediate care and attention they need. Moreover, an Animal Control Officer can play a pivotal role in public education, helping citizens understand responsible pet ownership and the importance of animal welfare.
The absence of dedicated animal control not only seriously jeopardizes animal welfare but can potentially endanger community members. Rabies risks, aggressive stray animals, and incidents of animal-related property damage are among those concerns. Establishing this position can mitigate these risks, promoting harmony and safety throughout the county.
We appeal to the Steuben County Commissioners to recognize this community need and act swiftly to establish the position of Animal Control Officer. It’s a step forward in safeguarding both our animal residents and human citizens.
Please sign this petition to urge the commissioners to take action and ensure that Steuben County becomes a safer, more compassionate place for all inhabitants.
