As a former special education teacher and now a parent, I understand better than many the obstacles faced by families who have children with various disabilities. Living in a community that lacks inclusive playground facilities forces these families to travel for upwards of an hour to provide their children with a safe, fun, and supportive environment where they can enjoy the joys of outdoor play.

Ensuring the construction and maintenance of an inclusive playground is not just a personal endeavor, but an essential societal need. Inclusive play areas are more than just playgrounds. They facilitate emotional, physical, and social development, promoting a sense of belonging and acceptance for children of all abilities (Inclusive Play, 2019).

Yet, according to a study by the National Center on Accessibility, less than 10% of public and residential playgrounds in the U.S. are fully inclusive (NCA, 2017). This stark gap in infrastructure reveals a pressing issue that warrants immediate attention in our own community.

Imagine the impact on the local families that struggle each day to provide their children with an inclusive ambiance of play and interaction. An all abilities playground in our community would be a step towards promoting equal access to recreational spaces and fostering a more inclusive society.

The time to reflect upon our communal infrastructure and demand change is now. Initiate a community-wide movement to establish an All Abilities Playground in our area. Sign the petition, demand change, and contribute to creating an inclusive environment for our children.
