The Issue

Our city, Dayton, is home to an incredibly bright and diverse population of young individuals. Despite their potential, we often observe them being cast in a negative light by media, their voices ignored and strength overlooked. This narrative is misleading and holds dire consequences for youth's self-esteem and sense of worth. Furthermore, the absence of safe spaces where these young minds can cultivate their ideas and foster community engagement has left a void that needs to be filled.

The time has come to change the narrative and provide our youth with the opportunities they deserve. We intend to create a 'third space' downtown; a safe environment for our young populace led by them. From making decisions about paint colors on the wall to choosing various program offerings, we want to instill a sense of leadership and ownership among them. Statistics show that when youth are involved in decision-making processes, particularly in spaces they frequent, their sense of personal responsibility and community involvement increases significantly (source: American Journal of Community Psychology, 2015).

Dayton's youth deserves space where they can freely express themselves without judgment or fear. They deserve a platform where their voices and ideas are heard loud and clear. And it is our communal responsibility to provide these spaces to them. Sign this petition to support the establishment of a youth-led safe space in downtown Dayton, where the young can lead, learn, and influence in a positive and secure environment.
