Establish a Train Horn Quiet Zone in Downtown Roseburg

The Issue

The Federal Railroad Administration allows municipalities to establish 'Quiet Zones' where the use of train horns can be mitigated or completely eradicated. We propose to open a dialogue with Federal Railroad Administration, our local government, railway operators, and safety authorities, to devise safe alternatives that can replace constant horn usage. We already have gates with bells and flashing lights and we can add whatever other safety measures deemed necessary.

Despite their necessity in rural areas, in our urban setting alternate safety measures already exist that can substitute for these disruptive horns. Close proximity to the railway results in noise reaching 70 decibels inside our homes and businesses and near 100 decibels outside, a few times daily.

Businesses find the horn disturbing, and employees endure the noise multiple times a day, which can reduce productivity.

Let us make our city a safer, more peaceful place to live and work. Sign and share this petition to show your support for the establishment of a Train Horn Quiet Zone in downtown Roseburg. The petition will be shared with our council members who can contact railway authorities.
