Establish a State Lalit Kala Akademi in Haryana to Support Artists and Preserve Cultural H
The Issue
Haryana is a land rich in cultural heritage, traditions, and artistic expression. From folk traditions to contemporary visual arts, the state has produced many talented painters, sculptors, printmakers, installation artists, and multidisciplinary creators.
Yet, despite this vibrant artistic community, Haryana still does not have a State Lalit Kala Akademi — a dedicated institution to support, promote, and preserve the visual arts.
Many Indian states already have such institutions that provide artists with grants, exhibitions, scholarships, residencies, and recognition. Unfortunately, artists in Haryana continue to work without this essential institutional support.
Because of the lack of opportunities, many young artists from Haryana are forced to migrate to other cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Baroda, and Jaipur in search of resources, exposure, and professional growth.
This migration leads to a significant loss of creative talent from the state.
At the same time, senior artists in Haryana who have dedicated decades to artistic practice do not have an institutional platform where they can mentor younger generations and contribute to the development of the state’s art ecosystem.
A State Lalit Kala Akademi in Haryana would:
Why Haryana Needs a State Lalit Kala Akademi
• 1. Institutional support for artists – Many artists lack access to grants, studio spaces,
state-supported exhibitions, and structured art programs.
• 2. Protection of young talent – Due to limited opportunities within the state, many young
artists are forced to move to cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Baroda, and Jaipur.
• 3. Cultural representation – Haryana’s visual arts are underrepresented at national and
international platforms.
• 4. Economic and creative development – Art infrastructure can generate employment,
encourage cultural tourism, and strengthen creative industries.
• 5. Documentation and archiving – There is an urgent need to systematically document and
preserve the works of contemporary and traditional artists from Haryana.
• 6. Recognition of senior artists – Haryana has many senior artists with decades of artistic
practice whose knowledge and experience should guide younger generations through
mentorship, workshops, and advisory roles.
• 7. Preventing artistic migration – The lack of opportunities forces young artists to leave the
state. Establishing an Akademi will create local opportunities and reduce this migration.
• 8. Strengthening Haryana’s cultural identity – A dedicated institution will help present
Haryana’s artistic heritage and contemporary practices on national and global platforms.
• 9. Promotion of art education and research – The Akademi can collaborate with schools and
universities to promote research, workshops, and art education programs.
This is not merely a demand for an institution.
It is a call to recognize the cultural spirit of Haryana and to support the creative future of its artists.
We urge the Government of Haryana to immediately establish a State Lalit Kala Akademi.
“The final decision regarding the location of the Akademi will rest with the Government of Haryana, and it may be established at any suitable location within the state.”
By signing this petition, you support the artists of Haryana and help ensure that the state’s creative voices receive the recognition and support they deserve.
