My grandson should have experienced better care. He spent 12 long days in a regular pediatric room when he required the specialized attention only a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) can provide. This personal encounter awakens us to the need for a dedicated PICU in Rockford, Machesney Park, Loves Park, Illinois, and surrounding towns.

At present, close to 5 million children end up in emergency departments every year in the United States, and about 14% of these cases need intensive care(Pediatric Trauma Society). Having access to locally-based, specialized care could mean the difference between life and death, or the level of recovery for these children. In cases with serious illnesses or injuries, each second counts. Making families travel long distances to access appropriate care only risks lengthening response time and putting more lives in jeopardy.

The building of a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in our community would ensure that the sick children of our communities receive immediate and specialized attention when they need it the most, just as my grandson should have.
