Petition to Establish a Permanent Bangladesh Consulate Office in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

To the Honourable Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh:

We, the undersigned members of the Bangladeshi diaspora and well-wishers living in Victoria and beyond, respectfully request the establishment of a Permanent Bangladesh Consulate Office in Melbourne.

Melbourne is the largest city in Australia by population and home to a rapidly expanding Bangladeshi community, including thousands of families, students, professionals, and business owners. Victoria, as the “Education State,” hosts a significant number of Bangladeshi international students who rely heavily on consular services for academic, legal, welfare, and documentation purposes.

At present, Bangladeshi citizens residing in this region must travel interstate to access essential government services such as passport renewal, NID processing, verification certificates, visa documentation, and power of attorney arrangements—causing substantial financial, logistical, and personal hardship.

A permanent consulate office in Melbourne would:

• Provide timely and accessible consular services to the large Bangladeshi population in Victoria.
• Support the welfare and academic needs of Bangladeshi international students.
• Serve neighbouring regions including South Australia and Tasmania due to Melbourne’s strategic location.
• Strengthen Bangladesh’s diplomatic, cultural, educational, and economic engagement within Australia.

Benefits for South Australia :

For Bangladeshi citizens in South Australia, Melbourne provides a significantly more accessible alternative to Canberra for consular services. From Adelaide to Melbourne considerably closer by road than Canberra. Travelling to Canberra can also involve expensive airfares, limited flight numbers, accommodation and local transport costs. A Melbourne consulate would reduce travel distance, time and financial burden for South Australian residents requiring passports, NID assistance, document attestation and other consular services.

Benefits for Tasmania:

For Bangladeshi citizens in Tasmania, Melbourne offers a particularly practical alternative to Canberra because of its direct transport connections with Tasmania. Regular flights and the Spirit of Tasmania provide convenient links between Tasmania and Victoria. Travelling to Canberra generally requires additional travel and can involve higher airfares, limited flight numbers, accommodation and transport expenses. A Melbourne consulate would provide a more accessible and affordable option, reducing travel complexity, time and costs for Tasmanian families, students and residents requiring essential consular services.

For these reasons, we earnestly request the Government of Bangladesh to take necessary steps to establish a Permanent Consulate Office in Melbourne, Victoria, at the earliest opportunity.
