The Issue

As a resident of Fort Payne, AL, my life and those of many others have been disrupted by the closure of our local skatepark. This shared safe haven was a place where youth and adults alike engaged in wholesome, healthy exercise. Its closure now forces us to drive to Scottsboro, Huntsville, Birmingham, or Chattanooga to continue pursuing our passions.

The skatepark served as a platform to keep the youth occupied, fostering their talents while minimizing any temptation to indulge in vices. According to the American Journal of Sports Science, skateboarding has been identified as a beneficial form of exercise, enhancing coordination, balance, and agility. The pursuit of learning new tricks keeps skateboarding fun for years on end.

Our community needs a new skatepark suitable for all levels of skaters, both the experienced and beginners. Well-designed, dedicated spaces do not just create safer environments for skaters but are also proven to stimulate social interaction and community building.

Moreover, this move can yield economic benefits for our town. If equipped with the right amenities, the skatepark can attract skaters from nearby areas, bringing in revenue and promoting local businesses. According to the Tony Hawk Foundation, communities with public skateparks can experience increased retail sales and property values.

We urge the town of Fort Payne to prioritize the establishment of a new skatepark. Let's ensure our community, especially the youth, has access to safe, inclusive, and productive recreational spaces!

Kindly show your support and sign this petition today to show the city there is interest and need for a skatepark!
