Establish a New City in South Greene County, GA - Give Us a Chance to Vote
The Issue
The purpose of this petition is to ask our State Representative to support legislation that will allow the residents of south Greene County to vote on creating a new city. Even if you are unsure about the proposed City of Lake Oconee or don’t have sufficient information today, please sign this petition to get this initiative on the ballot in May 2026 and provide you with the opportunity to vote next year. We are asking our supporters to sign this petition to get a message out to our State Representative. He must support vote legislation in the Georgia Legislature for us to move forward.
South Greene County, Georgia, has been our family's forever home, a place where countless memories have been created, and a community that has nurtured and supported us. However, recent uncontrolled growth and lack of strategic planning are threatening the very essence of what we hold dear. Our largest investment - our home and community - is at risk due to the unregulated expansion that ignores the unique character of our area.
The creation of a new city in South Greene County is imperative to safeguard our cherished lifestyle and values. By establishing an independent city, we can exercise greater control over local planning, infrastructure development, and community preservation. This will allow us to implement thoughtful growth strategies that align with the vision and needs of our residents, ensuring that our environment remains sustainable and our community thrives.
Currently, South Greene County experiences overdevelopment, which is leading to congestion, strain on public services, and loss of green spaces that are vital to our well-being. According to recent statistics, population growth in Greene County has surged by over 15% in the last decade, with a significant portion concentrated in the south. Current counts of new or pending starts exceed 10k which includes approximately 2k rentals south of I20. Creating a city boundary allows control on annexations while giving voters more control. Without a tailored governance structure to manage this effectively, the quality of life we cherish may diminish rapidly.
Our proposal to establish a new city would focus on sustainable growth, emphasizing the preservation of natural resources and community-focused urban planning. By prioritizing these elements, we can create a balanced environment that accommodates growth while respecting the region's rich history and natural beauty.
This initiative is not just about managing growth; it’s about empowering the residents of South Greene County to have a say in the future of their community. A city established with the well-being of its citizens at heart will provide better services, safer neighborhoods, and a stronger community spirit.
We are calling on the support of our fellow residents, local leaders, and policymakers to recognize the urgent need for this transformation. With your help, we can advocate for the establishment of a new city in South Greene County that reflects our shared dreams and values.
We need our State Representative to sponsor legislation to allow us to vote. To date, he does not support this effort believing the County can resolve our concerns. We need you to voice your support.
Sign this petition to help create a future where South Greene County flourishes as a well-planned, sustainable city that honors our past while embracing the potential for future prosperity. Let us come together to protect the integrity and identity of the place we call home. if you need additional information about the city effort in order to support this petition, please email us at ecf92477@outlook.com and we will provide you the support you need to ensure you can make an informed decision.
