Establish a Minneapolis Reparations Task Force

The Issue

In Minneapolis, the seeds of change are burgeoning as we strive for justice and equity. We call upon our city leaders to establish a Minneapolis Reparations Task Force, dedicated to supporting Foundational Black Minnesotans—individuals whose ancestors endured the horrors of U.S. Chattel slavery. It's time we acknowledge the lasting socioeconomic disparities resulting from this dark chapter of American history and work actively to rectify them.

Historically, systemic racism and discriminatory policies have marginalized Black communities, leading to significant gaps in wealth, education, healthcare, and overall opportunities. As Minneapolis aims to be a beacon of progress, we must confront these disparities head-on. A dedicated Task Force can research and recommend actionable solutions tailored specifically for our community's unique needs.

Many cities and states across the nation, like Evanston in Illinois, have already started taking steps toward reparations, demonstrating tangible commitment to their Black residents. By forming this Task Force, Minneapolis can lead the way in Minnesota, setting a precedent for other regions to follow.

This Task Force would not only explore economic compensation but also consider access to education, healthcare, and housing—areas where historical injustices have had dire impacts on Black Minnesotans. It's about creating meaningful change that uplifts the generations that have been continuously oppressed.

We urge our city council and policymakers to take immediate action. Establishing a Reparations Task Force is not just a moral imperative but a step toward healing and unity. Your support is crucial in turning this vision into reality.

Sign this petition to demand justice and equality for Foundational Black Minnesotans. Let’s create a better, more equitable future—together.
