Establish a local Fire and Ambulance Station in Googong
The issue
My name is Jennifer Barton and I am the Director of the Our Place Early Learning Centre in Googong. I write this personal appeal out of deep concern for the safety of my community, particularly the most vulnerable among us: our children. Our neighborhood has recently experienced two medical emergencies at the Our Place Googong service. Response times for both situations were unacceptable. During the first instance, it took 17 long minutes for an ambulance to arrive to assist a member of our infant room. The second ambulance took 25 minutes as it had to travel from Bungendore.
In the second incident, a fire alarm went off at the service, causing the children and educators to evacuate. Whilst all service policies and procedures were followed, a 40-minute wait from the fire service caused the children to have to move to the playground with minimal access to water and no access to appropriate toileting or change facilities.
These instances reveal a glaring shortcoming in our community's emergency infrastructure: the lack of immediate fire and ambulance services. We are a growing community with increasing safety needs, and yet we remain dangerously underserved in this crucial aspect. Our children, teachers, and community members should not be put at such unnecessary risk.
It's important to note that response times can significantly impact survival rates in emergency situations. Nationally and internationally we can see the impact that a lack of funding into essential emergency services have on local communities.

The ministers are aware of the need for such services but have not allocated the appropriate funding to ensure that it happens. It is time that the local community back the professionals with the knowledge and experience that have been asking for this to happen.
