The Issue

In Lower Northumberland County, urgent medical care is a concern that hits close to home for many of us. My mother-in-law experiences breakthrough seizures, and every second counts when she needs help. However, every time we've had to call an ambulance, we faced agonizing waits of 45 minutes to over an hour. Such delays not only exacerbate her health condition but create an unnecessary emotional burden on our family. This situation isn't just our problem; it affects numerous residents in the area who have suffered similar experiences.

The absence of a timely ambulance service in our community is a gap in essential healthcare that needs addressing. Northumberland County is geographically vast, yet our emergency service infrastructure hasn't adequately scaled to meet our population's needs. According to the World Health Organization, timely medical intervention is crucial in saving lives, particularly during emergencies like seizures, heart attacks, and strokes. However, right now, we have to rely on distant emergency services that cannot guarantee the swift response crucial to prevent tragedies.

A local ambulance station in Lower Northumberland County could mean reduced response times and improved survival rates for emergency patients. Such an initiative would also relieve pressure on existing services overwhelmed by demand from larger urban centers. Investments in training local EMTs, outfitting a dedicated unit with necessary equipment, and establishing an efficient dispatch system are needed reforms offering tangible benefits to our community.

Many other communities of our size have successfully implemented local ambulance services. In similar rural areas, localized responses have significantly lowered emergency wait times and enhanced overall healthcare outcomes. A study from the National Rural Health Association highlights how localized services are more efficient in reducing mortality rates due to timelier medical interventions.

While we appreciate the efforts of our current emergency services, it's time for Lower Northumberland to have the resources it desperately needs. Our county council needs to prioritize establishing a local ambulance service, ensuring that all residents receive the emergency care they deserve without life-threatening delays.

Help us make this vital change by adding your signature to this petition. Together, we can advocate for a local ambulance service that will offer quicker, reliable emergency responses, potentially saving lives and improving the quality of healthcare for everyone in Lower Northumberland County.
