Establish a landowner-only deer hunting season on Mount Desert Island

Establish a landowner-only deer hunting season on Mount Desert Island
The Issue
My name is Jesse Gilley I am a lifetime resident of Mount Desert Island (MDI), a place known for its beauty and rich natural biodiversity. However, the island's deer population has reached troubling levels, resulting in environmental concerns and safety issues. The unchecked growth of the deer numbers not only threatens the natural balance of our ecosystem but also increases the risk of deer-related accidents on our roads. There has been a lot of talk lately about opening a hunting season here on MDI. We need a sustainable solution that respects both the wildlife and the residents of MDI.
The deer population on MDI is expanding at an unsustainable rate. According to recent wildlife surveys, the density of deer in this region is significantly higher than the state's average, leading to overgrazing and damage to local gardens and native vegetation. This not only affects the plants but also disrupts the habitat of other creatures and decreases biodiversity, which is a hallmark of this island. Open hunting seasons might control the deer population, but they could also pose safety risks and potential chaos, given the high number of tourists and non-residents during peak months.
Therefore, I'm advocating for the establishment of a transferable landowner-only deer tag hunting season on MDI. Such a regulation would allow landowners (or someone of their choosing) who have a vested interest in the ecological health and safety of the island—to manage deer populations on their property effectively and safely. By ensuring only those with a direct connection to the land can participate, we can control the population without opening the doors to potentially hazardous open hunts.
This initiative would bring us several benefits, including easily regulated wildlife law enforcement, decreased environmental damage, reduced auto accidents, and a more balanced natural ecosystem Protecting our land, keeping our roads safe, and preserving our island’s beauty - not just for us but for future generations.
Please sign this petition to support the proposal for a transferable landowner-only deer hunting season on Mount Desert Island. Together, we can find a sustainable solution that balances wildlife management with the safety and enjoyment of everyone on the island.
