The Issue

Dear Prince William County School Board,

It has come to my attention that there is a significant lack of opportunities for male students to participate in volleyball within the Prince William County School District. As a volleyball player and concerned members of the community, I believe it is time for PWCS to establish a high school boys volleyball program.

According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, boys volleyball has been steadily growing in popularity across the country. In fact, from 2009-2018, participation in high school boys volleyball increased by 27%. This trend is reflected in neighboring counties such as Fairfax and Loudoun who have already established successful high school boys volleyball programs.

Furthermore, Title IX requires schools to provide equal athletic opportunities for both male and female students. Currently, PWCS only offers girls’ volleyball at the high school level which leaves male students with limited options for athletic participation.

By establishing a high school boys volleyball program within PWCS, not only will male students have access to an additional sport but it will also promote gender equality and inclusivity within our schools.

I urge you to consider this petition and take action towards creating a more diverse and inclusive athletic environment within PWCS by establishing a high school boys’ volleyball program.

Sincerely,
