The Issue

As someone who is fervently conscious of our environmental responsibilities, I have witnessed firsthand how excess food waste can tax our precious surroundings. It is not just my personal task to care for our ecosystem, but the onus falls on each one of us. Every year, vast amounts of food waste end up in landfills instead of being used as a valuable resource. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, over 35 million tons of food waste was generated in 2018, with only 6.3% being diverted for composting. This scarcity of basic composting services is a hurdle to food waste management.

Composting is an effective solution to this problem, turning our waste into rich soil nutrient for local agricultural use and gardeners, and reducing the amount of organic waste sent to landfills. Therefore, I propose the establishment of a free and accessible local composting service for the city of Madison, to allow everyone a chance to turn their food waste into a source of life.

We have all inherited this remarkable planet and it is our duty to safeguard it for future generations. Establishing a local compost service is a responsible step toward a more sustainable direction. Please, sign this petition to help us make a difference, and reduce our footprint on this shared home.
