As a mother of two small children attending elementary schools in Barrow County, GA, my mornings are filled with exhaustion and tears. My little ones struggle with a 7:30 am school start time, finding it hard to adjust to waking up so early. Moreover, the tight schedule leaves them without enough time to eat a proper breakfast, a vital component for their growth, learning, and wellbeing.

This is not just our story; numerous families in our community share the same predicament. The current school schedule was established five years ago, and since then, we have noticed that it seems to cater more to older children, who are naturally more capable of adapting to this early wake-up call. It's time to revisit this decision, factoring in the needs of all students in our elementary schools.

We hereby request the school board in Barrow County to introduce a democratic system that will allow parents to voice their concerns and vote on what schedule works best for their children. We propose the establishment of a rotation schedule that will fairly serve all elementary school children in Barrow County.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that middle and high schools start at 8:30 a.m. or later to give students the opportunity to get the amount of sleep they need, but many studies have also shown younger students struggling with early start times (source: American Academy of Pediatrics). With this petition, we aim to ensure our children, regardless of their age, receive the rest, nutrition, and preparation time they need before school.
