Everyone has a right to a warm home and affordable energy. We call on the government to work with opposition parties to establish a company operating for the good of society which provides energy at cost to individuals and businesses. Oil and gas suppliers continue to make profit, which goes directly to their shareholders. At the same time, people are developing health conditions from living in cold homes. The energy market needs to be democratised. We deserve to choose who we buy energy from – a company set up to make profit for shareholders, or a company set up that provides energy at cost, benefiting everyone. 

Once the company has been set up, it should then operate independently from government – outside of political debate and constantly changing agendas and leaders. It should be run by trustees, not shareholders. 

Energy bills, like food bills and housing costs are placing an intolerable burden on families unable to heat their homes and for many, to feed their children. We are faced by unacceptable choices between warmth, food and adequate shelter. We are a society first and foremost. Governments should put our societal interest first, but do not. Our economy should work for the best interest of us all, but it does not. We need a solution now! 

To help us all meet the cost of living crisis, The Society Alliance is calling on the government to establish a company offering consumers, who choose to buy from it, gas and electricity at cost. The operating costs of this societal company should be paid by an administration charge on those business customers who can afford it. The consumer and businesses have the power to then choose to keep their energy supplier, or use the energy supplier set up for the benefit of society rather than shareholders. 

Our tax system should be fair, and so should our economy. We - society - should benefit directly from the enterprise economy through companies operating for societal purpose in which profit is used to fund social need and our public services and consumers get the best deal through lower prices. It is time for society to benefit directly from the free market economy, starting with affordable energy.
