I have been a passionate skateboarder for around 10 years. Unfortunately, our city of Aiken hasn't had a place for quite some time that is accommodating to all skaters, regardless of their skill level or age. The only skate park we once had was privately run and has been closed for around 6 years now. This closure left us with no dedicated space to enjoy our sport as most parts of the city frown upon skateboarding.

A local park in our area possesses an abundance of land that could be transformed into a community skatepark. This would not only provide skateboarders like myself with an appropriate venue but also utilize this space effectively.

According to the Public Skatepark Development Guide by Tony Hawk Foundation, skateparks contribute positively to communities by providing safe spaces for youth activities and reducing incidents related to illegal street skating (Tony Hawk Foundation). Moreover, they can help foster social interaction among different age groups and backgrounds while promoting physical fitness.

Aiken deserves a public skatepark where its residents can freely express themselves through skating without any fear or restrictions. It's high time we stop looking down on this activity and start recognizing it as a legitimate sport that brings joy and camaraderie among its enthusiasts.
