Establish a 3-foot safe passing distance law in Cortland County

Establish a 3-foot safe passing distance law in Cortland County
The Issue
As a cyclist and pedestrian who navigates the roads of Cortland County, I am deeply aware of the everyday challenges faced by vulnerable road users. I am urging everyone to support a proposed local law which requires motor vehicles to maintain a minimum safe passing distance of 3 feet when overtaking cyclists, pedestrians, and other non-motorized users. This change is vital for the safety of all road users.
Every day, whether cycling or walking, I witness how dangerous roads can become when drivers do not account for the safety of cyclists and pedestrians. The threat feels especially real when there is insufficient distance between us and the vehicles that speed past, often causing unnecessary fear and risk of accidents.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that in 2019 alone, 846 cyclists lost their lives in traffic-related incidents in the U.S. This stark statistic underscores the necessity for protective measures at the local level to safeguard lives and ensure peace of mind for cyclists and pedestrians alike. Implementing a 3-foot passing law could dramatically decrease the risk of accidents and enhance road safety in our community.
Several states and municipalities have already adopted such measures with success, witnessing a reduction in incidents and fostering a more harmonious and respectful environment for all road users.
This law would not only protect cyclists and pedestrians but also remind drivers of their responsibilities to share the road safely. It encourages a culture of awareness and accountability, educating the public on the importance of maintaining a safe distance and respecting the space needed by vulnerable individuals on our roads.
Your support in establishing this law could fundamentally transform the road safety landscape of Cortland County. By signing this petition, you are joining a movement dedicated to safeguarding vulnerable lives, reminding everyone of the importance of road safety, and reaffirming our collective commitment to a more secure and considerate community.
