Halloween Horror Nights in Orlando and Hollywood have become legendary for their immersive horror experiences, drawing fans of the macabre from all around. As a dedicated HHN and horror enthusiast, I eagerly anticipate these events each year. However, the joy can be shattered by the unsettling presence of very young children and even newborns in these intense settings.

It's not uncommon to hear piercing cries from infants and toddlers, visibly distressed by the scares and loud noises, without any ear protection. Scenes from films like "Hellraiser" and "Terrifier" are designed to unsettle and exhilarate, and bringing young children into these environments can seem neglectful, if not abusive. Imagine the impact of exposing a child to such stimuli. It’s both unnecessary and harmful.

It’s inconsistent that unsupervised teens are barred from CityWalk after 9 PM, yet Halloween Horror Nights has no similar age restrictions. This begs the question: why do we allow very young children and infants to be subjected to such an environment? Is it simply a matter of financial gain overriding basic common sense considerations for child welfare?

There is a strong case for implementing a 13+ minimum age requirement for entry into Halloween Horror Nights. Such a policy would protect young children from inappropriate content and ensure that all attendees can enjoy the event in an environment suited to their developmental stage. In addition, requiring parents who do attend with their teenagers to provide ear protection can further safeguard their experience.

While understanding that some children have a predilection for horror, this should be balanced with considerations of their emotional and physical safety. Respected pediatricians and child psychologists agree that repeated exposure to intense stimuli can affect young minds adversely, and most reputable horror-focused attractions already have age recommendations or restrictions in place.

I urge Universal Studios, the organizers of Halloween Horror Nights, to prioritize child welfare and enhance their event policies. Establishing a 13+ age limit can serve as a responsible and necessary step to protect children while ensuring that Halloween Horror Nights remains the thrilling destination we're all drawn to.
