George Double joined The Athole Lodge, Douglas, Isle of Man on 14th May 1869; his occupation is recorded as Engineer. Was he there working with John and Waynman Dixon whilst they built the Douglas Iron Promenade Pier (now demolished) in 1869? The foundation stone was laid in January 1869, the Pier was 1000 feet long and it was opened on August 19th 1869. With George Double's later known associations working with John Dixon the coincidence is striking.
The 1881 Census lists Emma Double as living with her nephew Frederick Joseph Laws at 32 Victoria Street, Southwold. George Double was a Founder member of the Martyn Lodge, Southwold in 1882. Brother Double is recorded as being member No 10 at the time of the consecration of the lodge on 18th December 1882, his profession was listed as Contractor. He remained a member until his death in June 1916. Current research is ongoing with the United Grand Lodge of England, London, to see if he was a member of any other Lodge and whether a photograph of him might exist.
