GIVE ARTHUR ASHE BACK HIS DIGNITY !!!!
The Issue
Arthur Ashe was a top ranked tennis player in the 1960s and 70s. Raised in the segregated South, he was the first African-American male tennis player to win a Grand Slam tournament. He was much more than an athlete though. His commitment to social justice, health and humanitarian issues left a mark on the world as indelible as his tennis was on the court. This site is dedicated to providing a unique multimedia resource for understanding and promoting the legacy and values embodied in the life and work of Arthur Ashe as a conscience leader, humanitarian, educator and athlete.
Inspired by Arthur Ashe's proactive life as a conscience leader,
humanitarian, educator and athlete, the Arthur Ashe Learning Center (AALC) promotes his legacy to educate and motivate--with an emphasis toward inspiring youth. By vividly focusing upon the areas of education, health, and wellness, citizenship, and self-reliance, the AALC fosters empowerment and leadership in the individual and the community, elevating their sense of purpose and quality of life.
Mr. Ashe acquired the HIV virus during a blood transfusion and eventually succumbed to the disease.
Jenner has not an iota to do with what Mr. Ashe stood for and/or did while here on this earth.
It is an insult to the family of Mr.Ashe, the black community and the nation generally to give this award to Jenner.
This is not an award for someone that wants to be a gender other than what they are.
Arthur Ashe was a very caring open and honest person. He wanted his family, community and nation to be free and have the rights supposedly guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution.
Jenner was never involved in any civil rights for anyone.
This is apples and oranges here. This issues have nothing to do with one another. Ashe was an activist all his life.
He brought awareness to keeping your heart healthy after having suffered his own.
This man was truly about the struggle of the human spirit.
Take back the award ESPN and restore Arthur Ashe's dignity !!
Join me in telling ESPN to take back the award (The Arthur Ashe Courage Award).
