Asking for the resignation of Austin Ward, Big 10 Sports writer for ESPN

The Issue

Austin Ward is a writer for ESPN who covers the Big 10 league. On November 28, 2016, he wrote an article headlined "Ohio State football players safe, accounted for after on-campus attack." Which when it went to Facebook read "OSU attack leaves 11 injured; football team safe." The article started by giving two sentences about what had happened in a very vague description, and the third sentence read, "All Ohio State football players are safe, have been accounted for and were able to return to the practice facility on campus following a lockdown."

The author of this article showed very little concerned for the 11 he has reported injured, or for the fact that the attacker is currently being reported as a self-radicalized terrorist. There is no mention of the fact that the rest of campus united to stay safe and that social media outlets came together to allow students to check in as safe for friends and family. Instead, the author called Jerry Emig, who is stated as the Ohio State Spokesperson, to make sure all football players were safe and accounted for.

Later the article discusses Ohio State's recent victory over Michigan in Football. But makes no mention of the fact that on Monday, during the crisis, the Michigan Athletics department sent out a tweet telling Buckeyes to stay safe. The author seemed more interested in the fact that the lacrosse team was able to practice on the indoor fields than a major rivalry was put aside in a trying time.

I, and the undersigned, are calling for the resignation of Austin Ward, for ignoring the fact that an attack took place on all Ohio State students, and not just the football team.
