Keep Erith Phlebotomy Appointment System
The Phlebotomy service at this hospital serves a medium sized community and takes approximately 50,000 blood tests annually. It is used by young and old and also has easy access for disabled patients. I use this service as I am 69 years old, and it's the easiest and also the nearest to my home. If this service reverts back to the old sit and wait system it will be detrimental to a large number of patients, many of whom are families, elderly and disabled that cannot reach a larger hospital.
The reason being given for going back to the old system, is that too many patients are unable to get through on the phone to book their appointments. So the majority are being penalised over the minority. They have admitted only hiring an additional one telephonist for this task, and their training was not up to scratch.
The Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust can, if they want to, improve the appointment system rather than revert back to the old antiquated system. I have suggested that they invest in a decent online booking system and/or an app on your phone to facilitate this and reduce the need for so many telephone calls. To date the only reply we have had from the NHS trust is that they will postpone going back to the old system temporarily, but will not give us a date or any further information regarding consulting with the patients themselves on this contentious matter.
