As the news floods in (shootings in Copenhagen and Chapel Hill, extrajudicial executions of innocent civilians in the middle east) we are reminded of the power of words to harm and heal. Imagine how many lives would have been saved (measles epidemic anyone?) if the Lancet had retracted and forcefully and rapidly repudiated its harmful articles linking immunization to autism. With power comes responsibility and it is incumbent on our journals to lead the way by enacting and following the highest standards of ethical behavior in publishing. Sadly, there is much work to do before we can be uniformly proud of our scientific and medical publishing enterprise. Reed Elsevier continues to ignore the error-filled and hateful Manduca Lancet publication and violation of its own publishing and ombudsman guidelines. Pursuit of profits rather than principled positions seems to be the guiding ethos emanating from Amsterdam. A new letter of concern will be sent to Elsevier shortly. Please take a moment to review and add your voice at concernedacademics.org. Your actions are important and will make a difference. Thank you for your ongoing concern and support. Daniel
