Protect Indiana Cyclists with Safe Passing and "Dooring" Laws
The Issue
Woefully behind other US states when it comes to bicycle safety, Indiana is one of only 15 states without Safe Passing Laws and one of only 8 states without specific anti-dooring legislation.
Accidents involving the unsafe passing of motorists and the unsafe opening of car doors rank among the most common causes of injury and death for cyclists. For this reason, Doehrman Buba stands firm in our belief that no traffic safety culture can exist in Indiana without the adoption of firm Safe Passing Laws and the enactment of stringent anti-dooring legislation.
We believe current Indiana law leaves bicyclists critically unprotected, we urge state leaders to…
- Pass Safe Passing Laws that stress a strict three-foot passing restriction.
- Make the unsafe opening of a car door in the path of an oncoming bicyclist a ticketable offense.
