Rent Freeze and Cancel Los Angeles Rent Control Rent Increase JULY 1, 2020-JUNE 30, 2021
The Issue
It is critical that we freeze all rents for twelve months and cancel the Los Angeles Rent Control Rent Increase set for JULY 1, 2020 - JUNE 30, 2021. The rate must be set to zero.
NEARLY 50 MILLION PEOPLE HAVE LOST THEIR JOBS! COVID-19 has shut down schools, dine-ins, restaurants, etc. many people have not been able to find any kind of work, and therefore are unable to save enough money to pay their rent. In Los Angeles, the moratorium on evictions is temporary and expected to last only 6 months, when this crisis is expected to last much longer. Additionally, once the moratorium is lifted, tenants will still be expected to pay the 6 months of rent that were put on hold, a highly unreasonable expectation considering that about 80% of the workforce is put on unpaid leave during this crisis and several others are suffering from being completely laid off. To not do more (12 month rent freeze) and not stop the HCIDLA rent increase, is to slam tenants who are already struggling with crises induced debt and above market rental rates. This is cruel, unreasonable, and will not be tolerated by tenants.
Landlords are already threatening tenants with the maximum rent increase as soon as the “crises is over.” How can the crises be over with 50 MILLION people unemployed?! Los Angeles tenants have five demands for Mayor Garcetti and City Council Members:
* A cancellation of the annual HCIDLA Rent Increase for 2020-2021
* A freeze on all rents and mortgages
* Rent forgiveness measures
* Measures protecting tenants from landlord retaliation
* The eviction moratorium extended throughout the state of emergency
