With COVID-19 shutting down schools, dine-ins, restaurants, etc. many people have been unable to work, and therefore unable to save enough money to pay their rent. In Los Angeles, the moratorium on evictions is temporary and expected to last only 6 months, when this crisis is expected to last much longer. Additionally, once the moratorium is lifted, tenants will still be expected to pay the 6 months of rent that were put on hold, a highly unreasonable expectation considering that about 80% of the workforce is put on unpaid leave during this crisis and several others are suffering from being completely laid off. To not freeze rent during this crisis is to slam tenants with loads of unpayable debt once the eviction moratorium is lifted. This is cruel, unreasonable, and will not be tolerated by tenants.

Los Angeles tenants have four demands for Mayor Garcetti and City Council Members:

  1. A freeze on rent and mortgages
  2. Rent forgiveness measures
  3. Measures protecting tenants from landlord retaliation
  4. The eviction moratorium extended throughout the state of emergency

If these demands are not met, or there have been no concrete actions to meet these demands by April 1st, tenants throughout the city of Los Angeles will go on a rent strike. We organize in coordination and solidarity with the April 1st rent strikes happening in other cities around the country.
