I am deeply connected to the history of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The Native Guard, an African-American regiment during the Civil War, served bravely on Ship Island. Yet, there is no monument to honor their service and sacrifice. This lack of recognition is not only a disservice to their memory but also a missed opportunity for us to learn from our past.

Natasha Trethewey,  Pulitzer Prize-winning poet born in Gulfport, has passionately advocated for such a monument through her book of poems titled 'Native Guard' Her work serves as an important reminder that we must acknowledge all aspects of our history.

According to the National Park Service records, Ship Island was used as a training site for former slaves enlisted into Union forces during the Civil War. The first regiment stationed there was indeed called the Native Guards - they were among some 179,000 black soldiers who fought for freedom during this pivotal period in American history.

By erecting a monument dedicated to these brave men on Ship Island - we can pay tribute to their courage and resilience while educating future generations about this significant chapter in our nation's story.
