The Issue

As a woman living with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome, I have experienced first-hand the devastating impact of NHS inequality when it comes to IVF funding. It is time to address this issue and ensure that all women, regardless of their anatomical differences, have equal access to reproductive healthcare.

MRKH syndrome is a congenital condition that affects approximately 1 in 4,500 women worldwide. It is characterized by the absence or underdevelopment of the uterus, making natural conception impossible for those affected. While MRKH does not affect fertility in terms of egg production or quality, it presents unique challenges for family planning.

Current legislation surrounding IVF funding in the UK assumes that individuals seeking assistance have the anatomy required to conceive naturally. This outdated approach fails to recognize the diverse range of reproductive health conditions that exist and unfairly discriminates against MRKH women who dream of starting a family.

Denying MRKH women access to IVF funding not only perpetuates inequality within our healthcare system but also denies us our fundamental right to make choices about our own bodies and futures. By denying us financial support for fertility preservation treatments such as egg freezing, we are effectively being denied the opportunity to explore alternative paths towards parenthood.

It is crucial that we advocate for change and demand equal treatment for all individuals facing infertility challenges due to MRKH syndrome or any other reproductive health condition. We call upon decision-makers within the NHS, Government and relevant authorities to:

1. Recognize MRKH syndrome as a legitimate reason for accessing IVF funding.
2. Revise current legislation surrounding eligibility criteria for IVF funding.
3. Allocate resources specifically earmarked for fertility preservation treatments like egg freezing.
4. Provide comprehensive support services tailored specifically towards addressing the needs of MRKH women throughout their reproductive journey.

By addressing these issues, we can ensure that MRKH women are no longer overlooked and denied the opportunity to pursue their dreams of starting a family. Let us stand together and demand equal IVF funding for MRKH women, ending NHS inequality once and for all.
