Equal Access to Justice in Colorado: Require All Attorneys to Give Back
The Issue
Every Coloradan deserves fair access to legal help — no one should face the courtroom alone.
To: The Honorable Justices of the Colorado Supreme Court
From: Concerned citizens, attorneys, and advocates for equal justice in Colorado
Colorado faces a growing access-to-justice crisis. Thousands of Coloradans — including survivors of abuse, parents in custody disputes, tenants facing eviction, and people with disabilities — must appear in court without legal representation, while their opponents often have lawyers.
Legal aid organizations like Colorado Legal Services do incredible work, but limited funding and high demand leave too many people unprotected.
We, the undersigned, support the Equal Access to Justice Initiative and the proposed Rule 6.1A – Mandatory Pro Bono Public Service or Financial Contribution, submitted to the Colorado Supreme Court by Jane Kelly Reasor.
This proposed rule would require each actively licensed Colorado attorney to do one of the following each year:
Provide 25 hours of pro bono legal services, or
Make a $500 annual donation to an approved nonprofit legal aid organization.
This flexible, fair rule would ensure that every attorney helps uphold our shared professional and civic duty to make justice accessible to all.
We respectfully urge the Colorado Supreme Court to review, open public comment, and adopt Rule 6.1A to make equal justice a reality in Colorado.
