Equal Access for All: Ensure Adequate Facilities for Disabled Individuals at Large Outdoor Events in the UK

The Issue

As someone who recently attended a large outdoor concert in Crystal Palace, I was disheartened to witness the lack of adequate access facilities provided for individuals with disabilities. With a staggering attendance of 25,000 people that day, it was shocking to discover that there were only 60 spaces available on the access platform, (including allowance for one companion or carer per person).  This equates to less than 0.3% of the total attendees, having a safe and comfortable space that meets their needs to enjoy the event.

In the United Kingdom, approximately 14% of adults identify as disabled (source: Office for National Statistics). That number increases with age. These individuals deserve equal opportunities to participate and enjoy large outdoor events alongside their fellow citizens. It is essential that event organizers recognize this need and take proactive measures to ensure inclusivity.

While it is understandable that organizing such events can be challenging, it is crucial not to overlook the rights and needs of disabled individuals. There was a large sectioned off VIP area at this event, space was not a problem.  By providing adequate access facilities, we can create a more inclusive society where everyone has an equal opportunity to participate in these cultural experiences.

Therefore, we call upon event organizers throughout the United Kingdom to prioritize accessibility by implementing and enforcing regulations that require them to provide sufficient facilities for people with disabilities at large outdoor events. These facilities should include but are not limited to:

1. A designated number of accessible viewing platforms or areas strategically placed within close proximity to stages or main attractions. A minimum of 1% would be welcome.
2. Sufficient space on these platforms or areas allowing wheelchair users and those with mobility aids enough room for comfortable maneuverability.
3. Accessible restroom facilities equipped with appropriate accommodations such as grab bars and wider entryways.
4. Trained staff members available on-site who are knowledgeable about disability awareness and can assist individuals when needed.
5. Clear signage indicating accessible routes throughout the event venue.

By implementing these measures, we can ensure that individuals with disabilities have equal access to enjoy and participate in large outdoor events across the United Kingdom. Let us work together to create an inclusive society where everyone feels welcome and valued.

Sign this petition today to show your support for equal access at large outdoor events, and let's make a positive change for disabled individuals in our communities. Together, we can build a more inclusive future.
