The Issue

Grand Theft Auto V video game is not a "game" for children.  Grand Theft Auto V includes graphic images of the sexual exploitation of females; sexual, physical and gun violence; and creates an environment that encourages criminality.

Having a rating of "Mature" allows the game to be sold to any 17-year-old in a neighborhood retail store, and it dupes parents into buying it for their younger children because after all, it must not be that bad if their 17-year-old can buy it.

However, as one 14-year-old wrote in:  "[N]obody should play this game...I don't even call this a game. The point of this 'game' is to cause a massive amount of chaos and to steal cars and kill people. One time I was watching a friend play, and he litera[l]ly went into a hospital and killed everyone. Also, the characters cuss like twice every sentence, You can go to strip clubs, there is lots of drinking, and you kill everything in sight. Not a good game even for grownups."

Therefore, having the ESRB change the rating to "Adults Only" will help to remove this "game" from our neighborhood retail stores and protect our children from being assaulted by these overwhelming images of violence, sexual exploitation and depraved behavior.

How many more stories do we need about sexual violence against women or the sexual exploitation of girls or the child who was influenced by a video game and decided to re-enact one of its violent scenes to the death or maiming of others before we say "STOP!"?

Interfaith Children's Movement (ICM) is a grassroots, child advocacy movement founded in 2001 on the conviction that people of all faiths can, and must, work together — across boundaries of religious institutions and spiritual practices — to improve the lives and well-being of all children.

ICM advocates for Georgia’s children at the policy and service levels in the areas of Poverty, Education, Health Care, Juvenile Justice, Child Care/Child Protection, Parental Nurture and Immigration.  ICM has fought since its inception for the elimination of the sexual exploitation and trafficking of children.  We cannot subscribe to silence -- even when it's deemed to be "just a game."
