Ensuring Fair Recognition for Student Representatives

The Issue

Schools often require student representatives for various events, yet these students frequently miss classes due to intense training. Whether they are athletes preparing for major sports competitions, journalists perfecting their craft for press conferences and competitions, or academic competitors sharpening their skills for debate and quiz bees, they dedicate themselves to their roles, often at the expense of their academic progress. These students work tirelessly, carrying the school’s name and pride, striving to bring honor and recognition to their institution.

Take athletes, for example—whenever a big tournament approaches, they are pulled out of their classes to train rigorously. Their days are filled with exhausting drills, strict discipline, and physical strain, all to ensure that they can perform at their best. Meanwhile, student journalists are constantly honing their writing, reporting, and broadcasting skills, sometimes spending sleepless nights just to produce high-quality work that represents their school. Other student representatives, such as debaters, dancers, and performers, put in the same level of dedication, missing out on lessons, activities, and even personal time to improve their craft and represent their school with excellence.

Despite these sacrifices, many of these students receive little to no recognition for their hard work. While their victories and achievements bring pride to the school, they often find themselves struggling academically due to missed lessons, exams, and requirements. Instead of receiving support, they are sometimes met with teachers who refuse to allow them to make up for missed activities, decline to give them additional points, or even penalize them for their absences. This creates a discouraging and unfair system where students who dedicate their time and energy to bringing honor to their school are left feeling unappreciated and neglected.

It is unjust that students who sacrifice so much for the school’s reputation are not given the academic considerations or recognition they deserve. Schools must acknowledge that these students are not neglecting their education by choice but are instead fulfilling responsibilities that ultimately benefit the entire institution. Without proper support, many of them feel discouraged and demotivated, leading some to give up on their passions altogether.

This must change. We must take action and advocate for fair treatment of student representatives. Schools should implement policies that allow these students to make up for missed academic work, provide necessary considerations, and most importantly, recognize and appreciate their efforts. These students are not just individuals competing for themselves—they are carrying the name and legacy of the school. They deserve respect, recognition, and credit for their dedication and hard work.

Now is the time to stand up for fairness. Let’s ensure that student representatives receive the credit and recognition they rightfully deserve!
