The Issue

Recently, our family was jolted with an unsettling surprise when we discovered that one of our family burial plots was used without notifying all the co-owners. This was not just disrespectful, it felt like a poignant trespass on our personal history.

In Maryland, the law does not currently mandate that all co-owners of a burial plot be informed before it is used. This oversight can lead to unforeseen complications, confusion, and emotional distress for families. Communication and respect should form the foundation of such important decisions, honoring the intent of those who rest and ensuring peace of mind for those who remember them.

Moreover, studies show that about 15% of burial plots are co-owned, often by distant relatives who may not communicate frequently. Without a legal requirement to notify all parties, it is easy for decisions to be made without full consensus or awareness, resulting in deeper family conflicts.

To address this pressing issue, I propose a legislative amendment requiring funeral homes and cemeteries in Maryland to notify all co-owners before any burial plot can be used. This notification can be implemented through certified mail or verified electronic communication ensuring no stone is left unturned.

This isn't merely a request for paperwork. This is about maintaining the sanctity of family and providing peaceful resolutions during times of bereavement. This measure will safeguard against the inevitable disputes and financial woes that arise from unauthorized plot usage.

Benefiting families in Maryland, this regulation will ensure that every family member, regardless of their location or distance, remains integral in decisions about their loved ones and their final resting places.

Stand with me to protect these sacred spaces. Sign our petition today to push for this crucial change in Maryland’s burial plot policies. Let’s foster a culture of respect, communication, and peace for our families' future.
