Ensure transparency in Amazon India's delivery charges
The Issue
Amazon India, Make Every Checkout Charge Transparent!
I, like millions of Indians, shop regularly on Amazon India because it is convenient, reliable and often the first platform I turn to for everyday purchases.
Recently, however, I noticed an additional mandatory Doorstep Delivery charge appearing during checkout for certain products. While purchasing branded footwear, no such charge appeared when I added the item to my cart. It was only after proceeding to checkout that a Marketplace Fee and a Doorstep Delivery charge were added to the final bill.
This is not just about ₹29 or ₹99.
It is about transparency.
Across online consumer forums, many customers have shared similar experiences of encountering mandatory Doorstep Delivery or Open Box Delivery charges on products such as electronics, branded footwear, watches, handbags and other higher-value items. The amount appears to vary from one order to another, yet there is little publicly available information explaining how these charges are determined or why they differ.
Businesses have the right to recover genuine operational costs. Consumers, however, also have the right to understand what they are paying for and why.
We are therefore requesting Amazon India to:
- Clearly explain the purpose of the Doorstep Delivery/Open Box Delivery charge.
- Publish a transparent policy describing when the charge applies and how the amount is determined.
- Clearly disclose any mandatory additional charges throughout the shopping journey so consumers can make informed purchasing decisions.
- Review these charges in consultation with consumer protection authorities to ensure that they are transparent, fair and consistently applied.
This petition is not about opposing genuine delivery charges. It is about encouraging greater transparency, accountability and consumer confidence in one of India's largest e-commerce platforms.
If you have encountered similar charges, please sign this petition and share your experience. Together, we can encourage fairer and more transparent online shopping for everyone.
