BBC Newsnight this week highlighted the case of Dr John Watkinson and 26 colleagues who were all referred to the GMC by University of Birmingham Hospitals but had their case closed with no action
This has triggered an inquiry into the culture of the hospital and is this just another symptom of managers getting away with ultimate responsibility to protect the credibility of the Trust?
The sad thing is that there was no mention of the nurses and midwives who have no doubt been referred also
We wonder how many of them were not represented and so consequently would have got a sanction and may have ended their careers
We hear this theme time and time again and yet where are Newsnight, Panorama and the tabloids - Does this say more about how we value each profession?
He said in the interview " we were not trained in how to cope with when someone declares war on you... hero to zero just like that"
The long term impact to the person being investigated is huge and ofter irreversible - yet the consequence to those that maliciously refer or do so without any definitive evidence is non existant
Regulation is vital for public safety but using the gaps in the regulators referral system for someones own benefit risks patient safety in every way
