NMC Nurses and Midwives condemmed

It is rare for organisations to listen and protect whistleblowers but this is absolutely what should happen

Usually organisations will work to mitigate any risk to themselves, including financial risk, which will invariable result in the whistleblower being removed rather than the person at fault.

They listened to the whistleblowers and despite there being a huge financial impact to HCA international and the LOC they escalated and now as he should he is facing his regulator. I would never wish anyone to lose their carer - regulation should be about helping the practitioner improve but how does that regulator truly get to the bottom of whether a person can truly remediate?

It is sad when such a brilliant practitioner thinks they are past the rules. It is true that many patients did have more time on this earth because he "tried" but the "above the rules" approach he used when questioned by colleagues - many of which were the chemotherapy nursing staff was far from ok.

I remember calling him in the early hours when on call about one of his patients.
The next day in the chemo suite he caught me and said " the only time I want you to be speaking to me at that time of the morning is if you are lying next to me."
For the first time in my life I actually had a swift retort "Patients come first Prof, not our own ego's"
I was shitting myself as I thought he may complain about me and I'd be right back infront of the NMC again. But he just laughed and walked off. If he had I would have stood by what I said and I know my colleagues would have stood by me this time.

Luckily the rest of the oncologists and wider team who work at our private unit are incredible - so knowledgeable and so ethical. Poor behaviour and poor practice will not be swept under the carpet.

Many other NHS and private employers could learn from how HCA/LOC handled this
Whistleblowers aren't trying to get away from their own bad practice
Whistleblowers aren't trouble makers
Whistleblowers aren't after a fast buck
Whistleblowers aren't vindictive
Whistleblowers in healthcare ARE putting their patients first.

I've worked for other private organisations who put profits before safety and who showed all the glossy paraphinalia to the public world of a caring sharing organisation but fundamentally did not care about staff.
It got me in trouble, I nearly lost my carer and my life.

Luckily where I work now believed in me and showed me that there are employers out there, willing to give you a chance, believe you and step up for you. To work in a healthcare organisation that care as much about their staff as they do their patients is sadly a rarity...
