UPDATE: Coalsnaughton £1 Million Support Funding – Petition Update

This is fantastic news for the people of Coalsnaughton.

As reported by the BBC, the UK Government has confirmed that the ground movement affecting the village was caused by historic coal mining and has accepted responsibility. Residents from the 97 evacuated homes will now receive support under the Coal Mining Subsidence Act, with help available to make homes safe, and in the most serious cases, support to relocate.

Hopefully this announcement will also help families move away from the temporary accommodation they have been placed in, which has been widely reported as falling below the standard people would expect during such a difficult time.

We have heard directly from residents who have contacted Clackmannanshire Council Memes to share their experiences. Nobody should have to deal with the trauma of losing their home and then feel they must fight for suitable temporary accommodation.

The petition created by Clackmannanshire Council Memes is still awaiting a response from Clackmannanshire Council.

Following the First Minister’s visit to Coalsnaughton, £1 million was made available to the council to support the emergency response. Our petition is simply asking for transparency and reassurance that this funding will be ring-fenced for the Coalsnaughton emergency and used only to support affected residents.

This request comes at a time when residents are already questioning council priorities, following:

A 13% council tax increase for 2025/26 and a further 5.6% increase for 2026/27.
The Chief Executive’s salary increase bringing the role to around £165,755 per year.
£422,321.92 spent on COSLA membership costs between 2020 and 2025.
Significant councillor pay increases.
This is not about accusing anyone of wrongdoing. It is about transparency, accountability and giving residents confidence that money intended for Coalsnaughton stays focused on the people who need it most.

After everything residents have been through, they deserve that reassurance.
