The Issue

Safety in school should be a top priority. As a member of the Basking Ridge community in Bernards, NJ, I've witnessed challenges that our students face daily, including instances of violence and bullying in school hallways. Many students are making poor decisions, such as jumping inside moving school buses, which is not only dangerous but reflects a broader issue of inadequate supervision at crucial times and places within the school premises.

I remember a day when I saw a group of students pushing and shoving each other down the school corridor, unsupervised and unchecked. It was during a time when classes were changing, and the chaos was unsettling. It made me realize the importance of having adults present to deter such behavior. Studies indicate that bullying and violent incidents decrease significantly when there are authority figures visibly present.

This petition calls for the immediate deployment of teachers or designated staff members to monitor hallways effectively during critical times, such as between classes and lunch breaks. By increasing adult supervision, we can create a safer, more supportive environment for our students. It will not only discourage negative behavior but also provide students with guidance, enabling them to make better choices.

Our children deserve a learning environment where they feel safe and supported. We urge the Basking Ridge school authorities to take swift and decisive action to ensure our schools offer a secure environment for all students. Please join me in signing this petition to make a positive change in our community's schools. Together, we can foster a safer, more compassionate educational environment.
