Ensure Student Safety and Transparency at FX O RILEY

Ensure Student Safety and Transparency at FX O RILEY
The Issue
Simcoe Muskoka District School Board, School Administration of Father FX ORiley Catholic School, and Local Elected Officials
We, the undersigned parents, guardians, and community members, are deeply concerned about a recent incident at Father FX ORiley Catholic School involving a Grade 4 student who reportedly created a “kill list” naming other students.
Threats of violence in a school environment must be taken with the utmost seriousness. However, what has further alarmed many families is that the broader parent community was not informed by the school when the situation was discovered. Instead, many parents only learned about the incident through social media and conversations with other families.
Parents entrust schools with the safety of their children every day. When serious threats occur, families deserve transparency, clear communication, and decisive action to ensure the safety of all students.
We are calling onSimcoe Muskoka District School Board and the administration of Father FX O’Riley to take the following actions:
Provide full transparency to parents regarding when the incident was discovered and what actions were taken.
Clearly communicate the safety protocols being implemented to protect all students.
Ensure that any student making threats of violence receives immediate professional assessment and appropriate intervention before returning to a regular classroom environment.
Establish clear policies requiring timely notification to parents when serious safety incidents occur within the school.
Reaffirm and enforce the school board’s zero-tolerance policies regarding threats and violence.
The safety of our children must always come first. Parents should never learn about serious safety incidents through social media instead of direct communication from their school.
The student who is responsible for the kill list should also face a harsher consequence than just a 10 day suspension.
We urge the school administration and the school board to address these concerns immediately and restore trust with the parent community through transparency, accountability, and decisive action.
Signed,
Concerned Parents, Guardians, and Community Members
