Ensure seating by age order on school buses
The Issue
Hi, my name is Adam, and I'm 10 years old. I'm in the fifth grade and a proud bus rider. There's an unspoken tradition that when you reach the fifth grade, you finally earn the privilege to sit at the back of the bus. It's something we've all looked forward to as we've journeyed through elementary school, a small sign of growing up and gaining a bit more independence.
However, this year has been different, and I feel like something important has been overlooked. My bus driver is allowing students of all ages, including kindergarteners, to sit wherever they like. This means that even my 5-year-old brother, a kindergartener, sometimes sits at the back with us older kids.
Now, don't get me wrong—I love my little brother! But the back of the bus should be reserved for older students who have waited so patiently to sit there. It's part of our school's tradition and gives us something to look forward to each new school year. It also helps maintain order and safety on the bus, as younger children need more supervision and should ideally sit closer to the front near the driver.
I believe implementing a standing rule that ensures younger students, particularly kindergarteners and those in lower grades, sit towards the front while reserving the back for older grades, could restore this cherished tradition and promote a safer environment.
This seating arrangement isn't just about tradition. It supports the natural progression and rewards of growing up through school. Learning to wait for privileges like the back row is an important lesson in patience and respect for structure.
I’m appealing to everyone—students, parents, teachers, and school administrators—to help bring back this tradition by requesting our bus drivers establish seating by age or grade order. By recognizing this small but treasured privilege, we can restore a sense of fairness and excitement for us as we move through our school journey.
Please sign this petition to encourage policy change for age-based seating arrangements on our school buses to maintain tradition and enhance safety. Thank you for supporting our cause!
