Walking my elementary-aged son to school should be a safe and reassuring experience. However, multiple times now, at the intersection of Airbase Rd and Haskett, we have narrowly avoided being hit by oncoming vehicles and watched many more fly by as we waited to minimize risk of crossing. This harrowing experience is not just limited to us; it affects numerous children and families in the area who use this route daily as they walk to the multiple schools in a small radius or any of the local businesses on this strip.

Currently, there's an evident lack of reliable safety measures for pedestrians crossing at this busy intersection, as well as impacts to drivers' abilities to see oncoming traffic from local businesses signs making it harder to safely turn off of Haskett or cross Airbase even while driving. The absence of a stoplight significantly contributes to the daily risks both drivers and pedestrians face, and with poor visibility at the crosswalk, drivers often fail to yield, placing lives at risk. In a neighborhood that houses many young families, and multiple schools, it is unacceptable that such a hazardous environment exists at such a frequently used crossing.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), pedestrian deaths remain one of the highest in traffic fatalities, illustrating the need for improved infrastructures that protect walkers.
