Ensure Safety for Trumpeter Swans in Ontario from Hydro Lines

Ensure Safety for Trumpeter Swans in Ontario from Hydro Lines

The Issue

For nearly a decade, my local pond in Uxbridge, Ontario has been a cherished refuge for two lovely Trumpeter Swans, affectionately named R95 (NutMeg) and Cooper. During their time here, they've raised numerous Cygnets, adding to the beauty and vitality of our pond. However, tragedy struck in September 2024 when R95 met a tragic end trying to shield her babies from geese. She flew into the Hydro lines and lost her life, leaving Cooper to raise their seven Cygnets alone.. As heart-wrenching as these events are, they are not isolated incidents. Across Ontario, wild and domestic swans, including the endangered Trumpeter Swans, are at risk due to numerous obstacles, particularly Hydro lines.

To prevent such avoidable tragedies, we are calling for immediate action to instal bird diverters on hydro lines around areas frequented by swans and other birds. These small, affordable devices help birds see and avoid the lines, greatly reducing the number of accidents. The endangerment of our precious bird population is a vital ecological issue we need to address collectively, and implementing this practical measure can significantly boost their chances of survival. It's not just about preserving our ecosystem and biodiversity; it's about helping those who share our spaces, like Cooper and his young ones, to continue gracing our community with their presence without the looming threat of losing their lives.

Join us in urging the local authorities to take prompt action in safeguarding our Trumpeter Swans from Hydro lines. It's time to ensure that these beautiful creatures can thrive in their habitat, free from harm. Please sign this vital petition.
