I am writing this as a member of the LGBTQAI+ community, pleading for our basic right to be safe in schools. Our schools should be places of learning, growth, and acceptance, but for many of us, they have become spaces filled with fear and hostility. This should not be the reality for any student, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

My friends, my followers, and I often find ourselves scared to walk through school hallways, knowing that harassment and discrimination are everyday risks. The statistics are harrowing; according to a national survey by GLSEN, 70.1% of LGBTQ students report experiencing verbal harassment. Moreover, 59.1% of LGBTQ students feel unsafe at school because of their sexual orientation. These numbers are not just figures; they represent real students enduring real suffering.

It's imperative that school administration and policymakers act to turn this fearful environment into a sanctuary of safety and acceptance. At a minimum, zero-tolerance policies against bullying and discrimination must be implemented and strictly enforced. Schools should provide support systems, including counseling and LGBTQAI+ affirming resources, to help students feel safe and supported.

Training for teachers and staff to recognize and halt discriminatory behavior and foster a culture of inclusivity is crucial. Additionally, state and nationwide legislation must be drafted and enforced to protect LGBTQAI+ students from discrimination and violence.

Joining us in this battle for safety could mean everything for current and future generations who deserve a supportive educational environment.
