Having lost a child to gun violence, I know first-hand the heartache and devastation that such a tragedy brings. Yet, witnessing children further endangered in environments that should be safe and nurturing, often at the hands of those they love and trust, is utterly intolerable. This is why I am advocating for systematic changes that ensure the safety of all children, but especially those who are homeschooled.

Hamden, CT, has a responsibility to protect all its children, including those educated at home. Currently, homeschool children often slip through the cracks of regular welfare checks and oversight, putting them at potential risk of neglect or even abuse without external interventions. While the majority of homeschooling families offer loving and safe environments, we must ensure this is universally true.

I propose that local authorities establish regular and mandatory welfare checks for all homeschoolers within our community. By doing so, we can ensure that each child is receiving not only a proper education, but more importantly, a safe home life. Regular check-ups by social services can identify any risks early on and provide timely interventions.

Additionally, we must ensure that grandparents have legal rights to intervene if they believe their grandchildren are in unsafe situations. Grandparents are vital members of the family unit and often possess valuable insights into a child's wellbeing. Granting them rights to legally protect their grandchildren can prevent potential tragedies before they occur.

In the face of an increasingly dangerous world, it is our duty as a community to take proactive steps in safeguarding our children’s futures. By implementing these checks and rights, we can prevent unspeakable losses and secure safer environments for our youth.
